Selection Process
- Submit Application
Submit your online application before the deadline, and make sure to attach all necessary documents, such as your driver's license, birth or naturalization certificate, DD214, high school diploma, and college transcripts (if applicable).
- Written Test
The written test is critical in assessing candidates' mental abilities for the role. It includes situational multiple-choice questions. Thorough preparation can increase your chances of success. Passing this stage is a significant milestone towards a career in law enforcement.
- Interview with Merit Commission
By certifying candidates who pass the written exam, the Merit Commission ensures that only the most qualified individuals move forward in the process.
- Polygraph
Passing the polygraph test is an essential step in the selection process. It verifies the accuracy of the application and assesses the candidate's honesty and integrity. Thorough preparation and relaxation techniques can improve the chances of success.
- Background Investigation
A crucial step in the hiring process is the successful completion of an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office. This thorough examination ensures that only the most qualified candidates are selected for the role of Deputy.
- Conditional Offer
Selected candidates who pass the background investigation will receive conditional offers as vacancies become available. All offers for the role of Deputy are contingent on successfully passing a psychological evaluation and pre-employment physical including drug screening.
- Psychological Evaluation
Candidates who pass a background investigation must also undergo a psychological evaluation to assess their mental fitness for the role of Deputy.
- Pre-Employment Physical Including Drug Screening
All candidates are required to undergo a pre-employment physical which includes a drug screening.

As an entry-level Deputy, you will be required to complete two weeks of training for administrative tasks, attend the police academy, and participate in our field training program before starting your probationary period. We are enthusiastic to see you advance your career with our organization!
Divisions
Highway patrol is the division responsible for maintaining traffic safety and enforcing traffic laws for County maintained roadways. Deputies assigned to highway patrol will also respond to emergencies in Lake County.
Deputies assigned to the Criminal Investigations divison are responsible for investigating NEED TYPES OF CRIMES THEY MAY INVESTIGATE.
This specialized unit is comprised of Deputies who play a crucial role in helping those suffering from mental illness by providing immediate assistance and connecting them with mental health resources.
Deputies assigned to the marine unit are responsible for patrolling and enforcing laws on waterways and ensuring the safety of boaters.
Specialties
Deputies assigned to the K9 unit within Highway Patrol are specially trained teams of dogs and handlers that assist in various law enforcement activities such as search and rescue, drug detection, and apprehension of suspects.
Drone pilots have become an essential part of police work, providing real-time aerial surveillance and aiding in search and rescue operations.
An accident investigator is responsible for determining the cause of accidents and identifying which party is at fault.
Deputies assigned to CID may also be responsible for issuing warrants. This is a legal process that allows law enforcement officials to obtain permission from a judge to perform an action such as searching a person's property or arresting a suspect.
An Evidence Technician (ET) is responsible for collecting evidence.
